How BMI is calculated

Body mass index compares your weight to your height. It was designed in metric units as kilograms divided by meters squared. With pounds and inches you multiply by 703 to convert.

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²

Worked example

Someone who is 5 ft 10 in (70 in) and weighs 185 lb has a BMI of 703 × 185 ÷ 4,900 = 26.5. That falls in the overweight range. For that height, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 corresponds to about 129 to 174 lb.

BMI categories for adults

BMICategory
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy weight
25.0 – 29.9Overweight
30.0 – 34.9Obesity, class 1
35.0 – 39.9Obesity, class 2
40 and aboveObesity, class 3 (severe)

These cutoffs apply to adults 20 and older, regardless of sex. Children and teens are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles instead, because body fat changes as they grow.

What BMI can and cannot tell you

BMI is a quick screening tool. It is cheap, needs no equipment and tracks well with body fat across large groups of people. It does not measure body fat directly, so it has known blind spots:

  • Muscular people such as athletes and lifters can have a high BMI with low body fat.
  • Older adults lose muscle with age and can carry more fat at the same BMI.
  • Fat distribution matters. Fat around the waist carries more health risk than fat on the hips and thighs. A waist over 40 in for men or 35 in for women is a risk sign at any BMI.

For a fuller picture, pair BMI with a waist measurement or a body fat estimate, and talk with your doctor about your results.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is obesity.

How do I calculate BMI in pounds and inches?

Multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide by your height in inches squared. For example, 703 × 185 ÷ (70 × 70) = 26.5.

Is BMI different for men and women?

No. Adults of both sexes use the same BMI categories. Women tend to carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, which is one reason BMI is only a screening tool.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. Muscle weighs more than fat for its volume, so muscular people can have a high BMI with a healthy body fat level. A body fat estimate gives a better picture.
